Millions of websites can be found on the Internet. Search engines are aimed at helping users get info they need. The problem is that they find too much information. In this article you will find out how to quickly find what you're looking for. So how do search engines work? Search engines make a database of websites by sending "spiders" or "robots" that crawl through the Web, going from link to link. Once they get to a website, they index most of the words on the available pages. The search engine scans its database of sites to match your keywords to those same keywords in pages in the database. Basic search recommendations - Specify what you're seeking The more specific you are, the more information you'll find. Type in the search field exactly what you're seeking. For example, if you're looking for science experiments, enter School Science Fair Projects instead of science projects. If you know it's a biology experiment, add the word 'biology' to your search. - The + symbol Type the most crucial terms in your search first. For the search engine to find pages with all the words you're seeking, use the + symbol in front of each word. For example, if you're searching for information on Beyonce and Jay-Z, then enter +Beyonce +Jay-Z. Only pages which contain both words will be on the list. - The - symbol When you're seeking something specific, use the - symbol. Fir instance, if you're looking for information on Roger Federer but don't want to read about his charity work, enter Roger Federer -Charity Work. - Using quotation marks When search terms are put in quotation marks, it's called a "phrase search." The search engine will show a list of pages that have the words in the exact order as in quotations. For example, if you're searching specifically for a biography on Sarah Michelle Gellar, enter "Sarah Michelle Gellar Biography" and see what comes up. - Booleans Booleans can be applied in most major search engines providing advanced searching. The most popular boolean operators are AND, OR and NOT. Booleans are like the + and - symbols. AND means "include all of the words," OR means "include any of the words" and NOT means "exclude." Fir instance, if you're looking for information on bags and shoes, enter bags AND shoes. Only pages that have both words will be on the list of search results.
